My Brothers, Our Sister

By Dr. Michael Collier and Jake Bacon

June 6  – July 17, 2019

My Brothers, Our Sisters – an photographic exhibit about Haitian People. The pictures, taken by Dr. Michael Collier and Jake Bacon, document the people of Port Au Prince, as well as ongoing efforts by members of the Northern Arizona Volunteer Medical Corps.

Michael Collier and Jake Bacon accompanied the Northern Arizona Volunteer Medical Corps team on a recent trip to Haiti to document their work. They have assembled an exhibit that provides a unique perspective in answering the question: Who are the Haitian people? Through the lens of their cameras, we will see our Caribbean neighborssmiling, searching, staring: some wise, some weeping; patients and their relatives; the wounded, the weary. Who are the Haitian people? They are ‘My brothers, Our sisters,’ who live with us on this same small planet we call “Earth.”

Dr. Michael Collier spent years as a family physician and has photographed and written about people and landscapes since 1970. A geologist, an aerial photographer, and a published science writer, Collier’s award-winning work has been widely exhibited.

Jake Bacon is an Arizona-based photographer specializing in wedding and family photography. When he’s not with brides or babies, he serves as the Photo Editor at the Arizona Daily Sun newspaper in Flagstaff. He also shoots freelance assignments for corporate clients in Northern Arizona, as well as national newspapers and magazines.

About NAVMC...

Northern Arizona Volunteer Medical Corps (NAVMC) is a non-profit organization that was formed in 1995 following a trip to Armenia by Drs. Kelly Reber and Bert Mckinnon. The organization is currently coordinated by Dr. “Bull” Durham, who has been part of Northern Arizona Volunteer Medical Corps since 2005 and is currently President of NAVMC. He worked as a physician in Flagstaff from 1992 through 2018 treating upper extremity problems and providing orthopedic trauma care. He is transitioning into a position as an upper extremity surgeon in Tuba City working with the Navajo. He is Board certified in Orthopedic Surgery with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Hand Surgery. He has been involved in the relief effort in Haiti since the earthquake that struck this impoverished country in 2010.

Since 2013, we have funded the education of 50 residents of the Renmem Orphanage from kindergarten through high school, as well as supporting post-secondary education for eight children.

NAVMC also sends one medical team to Bolivia per year to perform surgeries on patients without healthcare access and to construct roofs to prevent the spread of disease. Projects in Northern Arizona have included a nurse for Camp Colton, and financial support for the Flagstaff Family Food Center, the Boys and Girls Club, and Sharon Manor.

Please consider a generous donation so we can continue this important humanitarian effort! Besides monetary donations, volunteers are needed to head minister the organization. Be a part of this local, all-volunteer, life-saving effort! www.navmc.org
